Adverbs An adverb is a word that tells how, when, or where something happens. Adverbs tell more information about verbs. An adverb can appear before or after a verb. Many adverbs that tell how something is done end in -ly.
How: Bingham gazed thoughtfully. thoughtfully is describing the verb gazed
He repeatedly asked about ruins. repeatedly is describing the verb asked
When: Slowly he saw the city's outline. slowly is describing the verb saw
Travelers seldom stopped there. seldom is describing the verb stopped
Where: The mule train stopped nearby. nearby is describing the verb stopped
The sun shone overhead. overhead is describing the verb shone
